We’ve all had fun this week looking back at the SEC Championship game. And our team still has a few more days to savor what they’ve accomplished so far - with the Heisman ceremony coming on Saturday.
But I think that it’s time to turn our attention to Texas.
I just read the Sports Illustrated story on the SEC Championship from the December 14th issue. And while it jabs at Alabama (specifically the fans), it also made me laugh out loud a few times. But the biggest thing I noticed is that even in this article, the Texas bulletin board material continues to grow.
The media is already trying to tell Texas that they aren’t getting the respect they deserve. In fact, it started with Kirk Herbstreit the night of the SEC Championship and Big-12 Championship games.
Do they want to give Texas a psychological advantage? Why do they seem to want to set Alabama up?
I’m starting to see why Coach Saban is so media-wary.
Wasn’t it just ONE WEEK ago that no one thought that Alabama could pull off a victory in the SEC Championship game?
Wasn’t it just ONE WEEK ago that Greg McElroy was maligned on radio talk shows (at least the ones in Atlanta) as a possible “weak link” on the Alabama team? That the O Line was a “potential weakness” on the Alabama team? That Mark Ingram “wouldn’t get through the Florida defense”?
It seems that the bandwagon can hitch up to a new wagon fairly quickly. Because this week, all of those negatives have never been more positive. The praise and “media-love” is at highs that we as fans haven’t seen since, oh, I’d say 1992.
Those that were nay-sayers just one week before are now preachin’ the gospel of Bama. The talking heads that had been talking out of one side of their mouth, swapped over to the other side in an instant.
How will Coach Saban combat the bandwagon?
If Rolondo McClain’s comments tell us anything, Coach Saban has already begun to battle those messages. In a Birmingham News blog post, McClain was quoted as saying, ”We’re not done. We still know what we have to do. By no means are we satisfied yet. Until we win the national championship, we’re still hungry. Right now, everybody loves us. We just won the SEC championship. But if we lose to Texas, everybody will be off the bandwagon. Everybody will hate us again. We’ve just got to keep pushing. We know what we have to do.”
Smart guy. Let’s hope that he is in the ears of his teammates telling them the same thing.
