An Open Letter to Steve Spurrier…

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Really, Steve Spurrier?  You really expect us to believe that you had no idea you didn’t vote for Tim Tebow?

Really???

And you really expect us to believe that you didn’t know it until a couple of days ago?   The press has been all over “Who-didn’t-vote-for-Tebow Gate” since the poll was made public.

So really, you expect us to believe that you just found out???

Really???

What I think is that if things really happened the way you say they did, that you would have made a call well before SEC Media Days to try to right the wrong.  That you would have at least tried to resolve the issue quietly.  That you would have a new Director of Operations by now.

But I guess what surprises me most is that you didn’t just walk in to media days and say, “I’m the one that didn’t vote for Tebow.  I think I could do more with Jevan Snead.  And if you don’t like it, then you can go to Hell!”

Now that would be the Spurrier that we all know and secretly love.  That would be the Spurrier that we get a kick out of watching.  That would be the Spurrier that we’ve come to expect - the one who does things his own way and doesn’t give a shit about what anyone else thinks about it.

But this Spurrier who apologizes???  Who is he???

Maybe you are worried about hurting your ties to Florida.  But you weren’t really worried about that when you called out Urban Meyer and said he’d go to Notre Dame, now were you?

Or maybe things really did happen the way you say they did and the other person filled in the ballot.  But if that’s the case, then I think I’m equally disappointed.

Calling all Tim Tebow haters…

Friday, July 24th, 2009

What happens when you get 4 of the most powerful coaches in the SEC in one place to discuss their powerhouse football programs?

Tim Tebow ends up upstaging them because somebody decides to ask him if he’s “saving himself for marriage”.

My question is “Who cares???”

And the answer to that is, “Apparently a lot of people since it was the main topic of discussion on afternoon radio.”

And now I’m wasting my time writing about it too.

Here’s the thing that bothers me…

Here’s this guy who, from all reports, is a good guy and is an amazing athlete.  And other than being over the top and obnoxious about his personal beliefs and how competitive he is, nobody can come up with anything legitimately bad to say about him.  So they start questioning his personal life - and I do mean his very personal life (anyone who listens to a certain sports talk radio station in B’ham knows the rumors they’ve been discussing).

My perspective is this -

If Tim Tebow walks the walk and is sincere in what he says & does, then I say, “Good for you for being yourself and not worrying about all the haters.”

But if he does it for show, then he’ll eventually self-destruct.  The ones that do it just for show always do…  Only time will tell.

And until then, if you want a reason to hate Tim Tebow, just hate him because he plays for Florida….  That’s reason enough for me!

SEC Media Days - Let the Circus Begin

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Well, the circus won’t officially begin until Kiffen & Spurrier are in the same room together.  But there were a few highlights from today….

Apparently the media is determined to try to get the lone coach who didn’t vote for Tim Tebow on 1st team All SEC to admit it in front of God and everyone.  Think that anonymous coach will admit it?!  All 4 coaches today said something like, ‘Of course I voted for Tim Tebow!!!’  We’ll see what tomorrow brings…

And I mean, I know he’s the head coach at Vandy - not really an SEC powerhouse - but couldn’t the media come up with better questions for Bobby Johnson than ‘Aren’t you glad you didn’t suck so bad last year?’  I kind of felt sorry for him!

And Dan Mullen has to be the most excited coach in the conference - heck in the United States!  I counted that he used the word excite (or a variation of it) at least 23 times.  Poor guy, I don’t think he realizes that he is at Mississippi State now instead of Florida…

More tomorrow since we have Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Florida…. Should be much more interesting.

Thank you Sports Illustrated!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

So, I finally saw something last Friday that I felt was worth writing about…Nick Saban’s cover of Sports Illustrated!!!  I mean, he has been at the top of my list for quite awhile - I’m just glad that others are also recognizing him as cover worthy.

My one question, however, is this - Why use a photo with even a hint of a smile?

I like my Nick Saban with attitude.  I like him when he’s serious - focused - intent.

I like my Nick Saban screaming at players and gettin’ all over the fans and reporters.  I like him yellin’ at folks.

So, come on, Sports Illustrated.  If you’re going to give my man a cover - make it a cover that shows him at his best…when he’s chewin’ somebody’s ass.

Can’t a woman be crazy about football too???

Monday, July 13th, 2009

So, I will admit it…  I’m a football fan.   A big one.  Which isn’t really all that strange for girls in the South.  Especially the Southeast.

But I’m not just a fan of the sport.  I am an Alabama Football fan.  I love my Crimson Tide.  And I’ve always been a fan - I grew up going to games with my family.  Hell, the 1992 Sugar Bowl was a family trip!  But over the past few years, some may say that my fandom has gotten a little over-the-top.  Maybe you’d say I’m a little obsessed, or overly invested in my team.  Example - I was online refreshing Scout.com and Rivals.com over and over again on Signing Day.  I knew more than my husband did about who we signed, who committed, who we lost…. Why, you may ask?  I don’t know - but it was fun!  And interesting to talk about.

So what I noticed as I read and listened and watched and read some more about my team, was that about 99% of the time, the people talking about my team, its players, its coaches, were men.

What’s up with that???  In 2009, can’t a chick have an opinion on football?  I know a lot of chicks that have plenty of opinions on football - and valid ones at that!  So why aren’t we represented?  We may not play football, but hey - neither does Paul Finebaum!

So here I am - A chick who loves football - Alabama Football - and I’m here to blog about it!
